Our story

We built HeavenHome because buying paint should not feel like a gamble.

Every year, households throw away millions of litres of leftover paint — and just as often run out halfway through a wall. HeavenHome exists to make precise, confident painting the default, not the exception.

How HeavenHome started

HeavenHome began the way most useful tools do — with a frustrating afternoon. Our founder was repainting a small flat, used the back of a paint can to estimate how much to buy, and ended up three litres short at 9 p.m. on a Sunday with one wall still bare. The next morning, with a slightly different batch colour, the patch was obvious. A second trip, a third tin and a lot of touch-up work later, the question would not leave: why is there no genuinely accurate, genuinely free paint calculator online?

Most calculators we found did the same crude thing — multiply four walls by a height, divide by ten, round up. None of them properly removed doors and windows. None handled multiple rooms in one estimate. None let you switch between metric and imperial without recalculating from scratch. None factored in the reality that a second coat absorbs less paint than the first. So we built one that does all of it, and we kept it free.

What we believe

We believe a good tool respects your time and your money. That means giving you an answer in seconds, explaining where every number comes from, and never asking you to create an account, watch an advert or hand over an email just to see a result. The calculator works the moment the page loads. Your data stays in your browser. The maths is transparent and visible in the breakdown.

We also believe that the right amount of paint is the greenest paint. Overbuying is not just expensive — leftover paint is one of the most common items found in household hazardous waste. An accurate estimate means you buy what you need, use what you buy, and send almost nothing to landfill. That is good for your wallet and quietly good for the planet.

How we build our tools

Every calculator and guide on HeavenHome is built around real measurement, not marketing. Our coverage rates come from manufacturer technical data sheets and our own testing across common wall substrates — new plaster, painted drywall, render, brick and wood. Where a number is a range rather than a fixed value, we say so and let you adjust it. We would rather show you the assumptions than hide them behind a single confident digit.

The paint calculator's engine is deliberately conservative. It includes a ten-percent wastage allowance for the roller, tray and cutting-in, rounds up to whole cans, and applies a realistic reduced factor for second and third coats. The result is an estimate that errs on the side of "you will have a little left for touch-ups" rather than "you will be driving back to the shop at 9 p.m.".

Who HeavenHome is for

HeavenHome is for the first-time decorator standing in a DIY store aisle, trying to convert feet into litres. It is for the experienced homeowner planning a whole-house refresh and wanting one shopping list. It is for tenants refreshing a rental before moving out. It is for small decorators and handypeople who want to quote accurately without a spreadsheet. And it is for anyone who has ever stared at a paint can label and wondered, with mild dread, whether two coats really means twice the paint.

If that is you — welcome. The paint calculator is the headline tool, but the guides section is where most of the real learning happens: how to choose a finish, how to prepare a wall, how to avoid the mistakes everyone makes the first time, and how to save money without ending up with a finish you regret.

What is next

We are constantly adding to HeavenHome. On the roadmap are dedicated calculators for wallpaper, tiles, flooring and render, a paint-cost comparison across major brands, and a project planner that turns a single calculation into a full shopping list with brushes, rollers, primer and tape. If there is a tool you wish existed, tell us — a surprising number of our features started as a single email from a reader.
